Devon's Economic Base
Devon has a variety of businesses and industries that help to diversify its strong economic base. We are situated just minutes from Edmonton’s International Airport as well as the Nisku & Acheson Industrial Parks. The roots of Devon come from the oil industry, and this sector continues to play a major role in the vitality of the community. One third of our population commutes to Edmonton, one third commutes to Nisku/Leduc/International Airport area, and one third work directly in Devon.
The major industries in the town include research and development, oil and gas, light manufacturing, tourism, health, education and a burgeoning service sector. Major employers in Devon are the Devon Research Centre, Devon General Hospital, BlackGold School Division and the municipal Office. Devon’s growth has been consistent and strong for almost two decades, due to its “future look” planning, as well as its economic base.
The Devon Research Centre is located in the Town of Devon Industrial Park. This facility houses research on both the Provincial and Federal levels. The research facility is also known as CanmetENERGY which focuses on the development of cleaner fossil fuels and related environmental technologies with a focus on oil sands and heavy oil.
