3248 Community Events Commission looks to bring cost-effective transit to the Edmonton Metro Region Town of Devon Council has voted in favor of supporting the creation of a Regional Transit Services Commission (RTSC) for the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. In September 2017, the City of Edmonton and the City of St. Albert signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to begin taking steps towards the creation of a RTSC with the goal of delivering convenient, cost-effective transit service across municipalities. In October 2018, 11 Edmonton Metro Region communities joined the MOU including Parkland County, Leduc County, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Morinville, Beaumont and Devon. “Bringing regional transit to Devon has been a priority of our Council since being elected in 2017 and it is something we will continue to explore as long as it makes financial sense to our community,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “As the smallest of the 13 municipalities at the table, we have much to gain as a member of the RTSC and we look forward to having this opportunity to work with our regional partners to bring efficient, cost-effective transit to the Edmonton Metro Region.” Municipalities will be voting on whether they want to be a part of the future Commission throughout February and March to determine if there is enough participation to move forward with an application to the Government of Alberta to form a RTSC. Thus far, both the City of Edmonton and City of St. Albert have voted in support of forming and becoming a member of a RTSC. After voting is completed, a formal request will have to be made to the Government of Alberta to create the Commission. If approved, work on regional transit services would begin in late 2020/early 2021 with services starting to be scheduled as early as 2022.
