After meeting with various community groups in early March, the Town of Devon has joined the Novice Program of Communities in Bloom. This will serve as the first step towards providing a smooth transition towards Devon becoming an “In Bloom” community.
Communities in Bloom (CiB) is a Canadian non-profit organization that is committed to the development of civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation.
“Being a ‘Communities in Bloom’ town is not just about flowers and trees and landscaping – those criteria count for only about one third of the evaluation criteria,” says Kristin Walsh, manager of parks, recreation & culture for the Town of Devon.
The criteria to be evaluated include: tidiness, environmentally sustainable initiatives, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape, floral displays and community involvement.
“Devon has so many qualifying initiatives already underway that we’re not asking anyone to take on a new project this year. Joining the Novice Program will allow Devon to participate without the pressure of competition, while still benefiting from feedback from CiB judges on our progress towards becoming a participating community,” said Walsh.
The committee is seeking input from any groups or individuals who have an interest in anything from maintaining trails to solar panel and waste reduction initiatives.
A community meeting is currently planned for Wednesday, Apr. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Town Office for community groups and residents to attend and determine the work that’s already going in Devon counts towards being a successful ‘Communities in Bloom’ participant.
