Early Childhood Review

Thank you to everyone who took part. Your feedback is invaluable and will help to shape the recommendations for future actions.

The purpose of this review was to establish the current status of the services and understanding of early childhood development, provision and community involvement and general ‘school readiness’ for our 0-6 year olds in Devon.  You have provided some excellent insight and we are now in the process of putting the recommendations together to take to Council. You can keep an eye out for the Early Years Services Guide, which will be available in fall and outlines all the great services, programs and opportunities for children aged six and under, their parents / guardians and early childhood educators.

Did you know that in Devon 24.36% of kindergarten children are experiencing great difficulty in one of more areas of the five Early Developmental Inventory domains*?

To put this in perspective, 1 in 4 children in Devon will be starting kindergarten and will be struggling in one or more of the following:

  • Social Competence
  • Language and Thinking Skills
  • Physical Health and Wellbeing
  • Emotional Maturity**
  • Communication Skills

*(Canadian average is 25.4%?)

** 30.8%, or just under 1 in 3 children struggling.

These numbers do not include children who are receiving support for identified developmental delays. With your help, it is our goal to reduce these numbers even further over the next few years.
