What is Extended Producer Responsibility?
Extender Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy approach where producers are responsible for the cost of their product packaging from production through to the post-consumer stage of its life cycle.
Extender Producer Responsibility shifts the responsibility and cost of recycling from governments to producers and gives financial incentives for producers to create product packaging that is better designed for recycling at the end of its life cycle. Currently, Alberta is one of the only provinces in Canada that does not have EPR Program in place.
