Connecting Devon

Connecting Devon Phase 4 underway

We are now in the final stages of the Connecting Devon project and are requesting a final round of public consultation from our residents and stakeholders before Devon's Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP), Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Area Structure Plan (ASP) for the Battery Creek Ravine area all go to Council for consideration.

The Battery Creek Area Structure Plan (ASP) applies to the 271.9 hectares of land annexed by the Town of Devon from Leduc County in March 2015. The lands are located in southeast Devon and are bounded by the North Saskatchewan River, Highway 19, and two ravines. The ASP was prepared in association with the Town’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan and Municipal Development Plan, and provides a detailed framework for the future development of the Battery Creek area. The following video conceptually illustrates how the neighbourhoods within the Battery Creek Area Structure Plan may develop.

Questionnaire

The Connecting Devon Phase 4 questionnaire is now closed. A big thank you to everyone who completed the survey and/or attended the March 28 Open House and our April 24 Public Hearing.

About the Process

The Town of Devon is updating its Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, Municipal Development Plan, and developing a new Area Structure Plan for the Battery Creek area. The Town is preparing and engaging on all three plans at the same time so that we can work efficiently. We also want the three plans to support each other in heading towards the same vision for our community.

This process is called “Connecting Devon,” because connections are a central theme of this project, including:

  • Connecting the Battery Creek ASP area to the rest of the Town
  • Multi-modal transportation connections are important for walk-ability, access and sustainability
  • Energy connections symbolize the Town’s evolving energy future
  • Social connections make us strong as a community
  • Connecting our past, present and future to create a compelling story of the Town of Devon

All of these connections are important for this planning process.

Over the past year we asked residents, business owners, and community stakeholder groups to share what they value most about Devon today and to weigh in on how to strengthen the idea of “Connecting Devon.” There were opportunities for you to learn more, attend an event and provide feedback throughout the process.

  • In Phase 1, our process began with background technical research and getting ready for community engagement.

  • In Phase 2, we began the process with a fun launch event on January 27, 2016 at the Community Centre to help set the vision and goals for the plans.

  • In Phase 3 we gathered feedback on your ideas to help our community achieve the vision and goals. Using this information, we have prepared the draft plans.

  • Finally, we have reached Phase 4 where we reached out for a final round of public consultation before finalizing the draft plans to present them to Council for consideration. The next step is for the plans to go to the Capital Region Board for their approval before they are returned to the Town in late June for further consultation prior to second and third reading by Town Council.
The project is also being guided by an Advisory Committee (click here to learn more about the Advisory Committee). The Advisory Committee is responsible for providing insight from local residents, advising staff on plan and policy development, being a sounding board for the engagement process, and helping to share information and raise awareness through their networks.
