Check ‘n’ Chat (CnC) is a confidential support option for people 18+ who feel that they would benefit from a regular connection with someone local over the phone. This would typically look like a 10-20 minute chat once or twice per week and would be a chance for the recipient to have a friendly, low key conversation with one of our volunteers.
This program is not counselling and cannot be used for that purpose. Volunteers are able to offer pre-approved links and resources and / or make referrals to the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS office) and chat on general subjects, a wellness check and build a connection with the recipient.
At this time, the service is provided over the winter months: Nov. 23 to Mar. 31 and may be expanded if required.
*While confidence is a priority, if a volunteer feels that they are unable to support you or you need additional one-on-one assistance, they will refer your name to the FCSS department and a staff member will reach out to you. If the volunteer feels that you or others are in crisis or danger they will call 911 or the support crisis line.
Volunteers have the right to privacy and will not be able to divulge certain personal information. If at any time the volunteer feels harassed or in danger, they will terminate their call and refer to the appropriate authorities.
This service is voluntary, while every effort will be made to match a client with a volunteer, if one in unavailable we will put the client on a waitlist or try to find an alternative support.

Individuals/agencies can refer community members to the CnC service through the same email or phone and they will be sent the CnC Community Member Registration Form to complete. Individuals who do not have access to a computer will be assisted via telephone. Once the form has been returned, they will be paired with a volunteer.
