One area that bridges multiple gaps may be for a retail-grocer hybrid business, which has both family clothing and groceries in addition to other home-use items.
Appliances and related retail show promise to be a regional draw. Specialist appliance retailers may prove effective for Devon, as it will draw potential shoppers from Devon’s greater trading area in search of a competitive deal.
Building materials dealers is a category where there is a strong enough gap in Devon and thus would support this type of business. More importantly, the sector is under-represented across the region.
The cleantech sector has been identified for Devon, as an opportunity for green building supply businesses to draw clientele from across the region. An ecofriendly home improvement store would meet the needs of a growing segment of the population and drive growth in the cleantech value chain and thrive in Devon.
Full-service restaurants are lacking in Devon. Given Devon’s mix of young families and professional, semi-retired, or fully retired demographics, the addition of full-service restaurants would meet local demand for greater diversity and quality, which was echoed in the 2017 Devon Business Survey. Local or regional casual dining establishments have the name-factor that would attract a local and regional clientele.
