Volunteer Income Tax Program

The Town of Devon participates in the Canadian Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) to offer a free tax service (simple tax returns only) for eligible Devon residents betwen March and April each year. This program was created to help low income individuals, families, and seniors complete their income tax return at no cost. It is very important that you bring all relevant paperwork with you, otherwise our volunteers will not be able to provide support. If you are claiming medical, you must tally them up before you come to your appointment.

There are a few different options for residents, but make sure that you are eligible:

Eligibility Criteria

Devon resident and your GROSS (before taxes) household income does not exceed

Taxpayer status       Family Income
One person         Up to $35,000
Two people       Up to $45,000
Three people       Up to $47,500
Four people       Up to $50,000
Five people       Up to $52,500
More than 5 people       $52,500 plus $2,500 for each additional person

 

This is for 2023 simple returns only. Full list of what we can and cannot offer is below. Residents with income over these thresholds also have low cost local options that our FCSS staff can give you information on.

Options for Support 2023 Taxes

OPTION 1:

Call the Town Office for an appointment – 780-987-8325 to book your in-person session for one of our weekly scheduled tax clinics. Wednesdays between March 20 - April 24, 2024. 

Please note - if you are unable to make an appointment, it is important that you call so that we can aim to reschedule you. 

OPTION 2:

Virtual Tax Clinic (CVIPT)

  • Make Tax Time Pay (formerly e4c): 780-722-9409
  • Please note: this is one of many options from the CVIPT which may be convenient. The Town of Devon does not endorse or vouch for any in particular. 

OPTION 3:

Free tax software for self-return - follow this link to options via the CRA (please note, these are for low income only)

What is a simple tax return?

In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from these sources:

  • employment
  • pension
  • benefits such as Canada Pension Plan, disability, employment insurance, social assistance
  • registered retirement savings plans (RRSP's)
  • support payments
  • scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants
  • interest (under $1,000)

Your tax situation is not simple if you:

  • are self-employed or have employment expenses
  • have business or rental income and expenses
  • have capital gains or losses
  • filed for bankruptcy
  • are completing a tax return for a deceased person

Volunteers will NOT prepare income tax returns with:

  • Capital gains
  • Farming income
  • Rental income
  • Self-employed income
  • Fishing income
  • Bankruptcies
  • Deceased persons
  • Interest income exceeding $1,000
