Home Energy Efficiency Kits Now Available to Borrow

The Town of Devon, in partnership with the Devon Public Library, is excited to offer Home Energy Efficiency Kits for residents to borrow. These hands-on tools make it easy for homeowners and renters to understand their energy consumption, identify efficiency opportunities, and discover ways to reduce utility costs while supporting a more sustainable community.

The kits are developed by the Town and are available to sign out through the library. Each kit contains a selection of easy-to-use diagnostic tools to help you explore how your home uses—and loses—energy.

What’s Inside the Kit?

Each Home Energy Efficiency Kit includes the following tools:

Thermal Scanners

Thermal scanners use infrared sensors to detect temperature differences and generate thermal images. These images help locate air leaks, areas with poor insulation, and HVAC performance issues—valuable insights that can support energy savings and improved comfort.

Fridge & Freezer Thermometers

Monitoring appliance temperatures helps identify inefficiencies that may be increasing energy use. Adjusting your fridge and freezer to recommended settings can reduce electricity consumption and extend appliance life.

Radon Detectors

Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that can accumulate in basements and lower levels of homes. These detectors measure radon levels and allow residents to compare readings against Health Canada and World Health Organization action thresholds.

Thermometer & Hygrometer

This device measures indoor temperature and humidity at the same time. Understanding humidity levels allows you to fine-tune heating and cooling systems to improve efficiency and maintain a healthier indoor environment.

Wattmeters

Wattmeters track the electricity used by individual appliances in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This helps homeowners understand operating costs and identify which devices are consuming the most energy.

Air Quality Monitors

Air quality monitors measure carbon dioxide (CO₂) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These tools help assess ventilation needs, improve indoor air quality, and support healthier, more energy-efficient living spaces.

Multi-meters

Multi-meters measure voltage, current, and resistance—helping residents safely check outlets, batteries, cords, and small electronics. They’re also useful for troubleshooting minor electrical issues and verifying that devices are functioning properly.

Wireless Hot-Wire Anemometer

An anemometer measures air speed and airflow to identify drafts, ventilation problems, and areas where conditioned air may be escaping. This tool supports improving overall comfort, enhancing ventilation, and identifying opportunities for energy savings.

Found Areas to Improve?

The kit includes a user-friendly manual with quick, low-cost actions you can take right away—such as sealing drafts, adjusting appliance temperatures, or improving ventilation. These small changes can deliver meaningful energy savings.

Ready for Bigger Upgrades?

The manual also highlights larger energy-saving improvements you may wish to consider, including insulation upgrades, appliance replacements, or deeper energy retrofits.
