2018 DESA Winners

Congratulations to our 2018 DESA Winners Snippers Inc. and Hardy's Your Independent Grocer!

1st Place - Snippers Inc.

Snippers Inc. is a hair salon & spa that is part of the Green Circle Salon program. The salon diverts solid waste through proper recycling and encourage clients to bring their aerosol cans back to the salon to be properly disposed of. The salon has installed LED lighting and Eco Head shower heads to reduce energy and water usage. The Green Circle Salon program is designed to help salons reduce waste and their carbon footprint. Last year, Snippers Inc. diverted 249 lbs of solid waste and 15 lbs of liquid waste from going to landfill.

2nd Place - Hardy's Your Independent Grocer

Hardy’s Your Independent Grocer is a local grocery store that have taken on initiatives to improve their environmental performance. Recent highlights include waste reduction and a reduction in energy consumption. They have reduced their food waste through donations and diverting meat waste as animal feed. Their cardboard waste is compacted using a bailer and collected for recycling and LED lighting has helped Hardy’s Your Independent Grocer in reducing their energy consumption.

The Devon Environmental Sustainability Award (DESA) program recognizes local businesses that are making an impact in our community. Big or small, tell us about your initiative and apply or nominate a business!

The deadline is September 21, 2018.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the DESA shall be granted to a company who staffs less than 100 employees, have been in business for over 12 months, have a registered business license in Devon and are located in Devon.

If a company has previously received a first place award, they may apply for the award again if they are applying with a new project OR if they are applying with the same project and have shown new innovation or positive improvement towards it.

Judging

  • Judging is completed by a panel of five judges and will consist of community members, Town of Devon Administration and members of Devon Town Council.
  • The average score will be calculated for each applicant based on the score given by the five judges.
  • The business with the best average score will receive first place and the business with the second best average score will receive second place.
