208 Community Events As summer winds down and families enjoy the last days of vacation, Devon RCMP is reminding residents to make safety a priority during the current stretch of extreme heat. Whether you are near the water or out on the road, taking simple precautions can help prevent serious incidents. Water Safety Many people will be heading to lakes, rivers, and pools to cool off. Devon RCMP emphasizes the importance of staying safe while enjoying the water: Always wear a life jacket when operating or riding on any watercraft, even if you are a strong swimmer. Supervise children and inexperienced swimmers at all times. Avoid alcohol or substances that may impair judgment while on or near water. Follow all posted safety rules at beaches, lakes, and recreational areas. Vehicle Safety With temperatures expected to remain high, it is critical to remember the dangers of leaving children or pets in parked vehicles: A parked car can reach dangerous temperatures in minutes. Never leave anyone unattended, even for a short time. Keeping windows slightly open is not enough—cracked windows do not prevent the inside of a car from overheating. Learn the signs of heat stroke, such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion, or heavy sweating. If you see a child or animal left in a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately. Police and emergency responders will act quickly to ensure their safety. Devon RCMP encourages everyone to look out for one another and help prevent avoidable tragedies this summer.
