New Pilot Aims to Strengthen Local Policing Services in Devon

The Town of Devon and the Alberta RCMP have partnered to launch a one-year pilot project designed to enhance policing services, strengthen community trust, and improve efficiency.

The pilot introduces a new regional approach while ensuring residents continue to receive dedicated service from local RCMP members.

Enhancing Community Safety and Stability

The initiative comes at a time when municipalities across Alberta are preparing for future discussions about policing models. With the federal municipal policing contracts set to expire in 2032, the Town of Devon and the Alberta RCMP are taking proactive steps to explore innovative service delivery that balances public safety with long-term financial stability.

Through this pilot, the Devon detachment is working closely with surrounding RCMP resources in the Parkland area to identify efficiencies and maintain consistent service levels.

This regional model aims to:

  • Provide reliable, consistent service delivery for Devon residents
  • Support stable, predictable budgeting for local policing
  • Build both short-term and long-term program stability
  • Advance “Community Safety and Wellness” initiatives

Quotes

“Policing is about more than enforcement—it’s about building trust and supporting healthy, safe communities,” said Inspector Kevin McGillivray, Parkland RCMP Detachment. “This pilot allows us to explore innovative ways to deliver service while keeping Devon residents at the heart of everything we do.”

Devon’s Mayor Jeff Craddock added, “Our community deserves policing that is reliable, sustainable, and responsive. By working in partnership with the RCMP on this pilot, we are setting the stage for a model that not only meets today’s needs but also prepares us for the future of community safety.”

What Residents Can Expect

Throughout the pilot, residents will continue to be served by their local detachment office and RCMP members based in Devon. The integration of resources with the Parkland detachment is designed to ensure a stable level of service while allowing the RCMP and Town Administration to carefully review options for the future.

Next Steps and Staying Informed

The pilot project will run for one year, concluding in spring 2026. During this time, both the RCMP and the Town of Devon will monitor results to and determine if this program will continue beyond a pilot.
