New solar system to help offset power consumption and reduce GHG emissions

The Town of Devon’s new solar photovoltaics (PV) array atop the Dale Fisher Arena is now complete and fully operational. This new 101-kilowatt system will help offset power consumption at the arena while also working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This solar project was partially funded by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s (MCCAC) Alberta Municipal Solar Program. Work on the project began in the summer of 2020 and is now complete and delivering power to the facility. All together, the system is expected to produce about 124,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

The Town will also be moving forward with its plans to expand the current Dale Fisher Arena and Devon Community Pool into a new multi-use recreation facility and these new solar upgrades are planned to be integrated into the design of the expanded facility. Construction is slated to begin on the expanded recreation facility as early as this summer.

“Looking at green and renewable energy solutions for our facilities remains a priority for our Town as we continue to work with our partners at the municipal and federal level to find ways to implement these solutions in a cost-effective way for our residents,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “With MCCAC’s contributions to this project, we have a double win as we do our part to foster environmental stewardship while reducing our long-term power costs for the facility.”

Trina Innes, Executive Director at the MCCAC adds, “Communities like the Town of Devon are reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by implementing solutions for a changing climate. The Action Centre is proud to support this solar installation through the Alberta Municipal Solar Program.”

This is Devon’s second major solar project as the Devon Community Centre had a 100-kilowatt solar PV system installed in 2015 which delivers the majority of the facility’s power needs.
