Wednesday, September 16, 2026 0 Community Events More materials accepted as producers take on the cost of residential recycling Beginning October 1, 2026, Devon residents will transition to Phase 2 of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling program, bringing more recyclable materials into the community’s blue bag program. Under EPR, the cost and responsibility for residential recycling shifts from municipalities and taxpayers to the producers of packaging and paper products. Phase 2 expands the range of materials residents can recycle while keeping recycling simple and convenient. Residents will continue to place recyclable materials in their blue bags, and existing Tuesday and Wednesday collection days will remain unchanged. New Materials Accepted in Blue Bags Beginning October 1, residents can also place the following materials in their blue bags: Glass bottles and jars Foam packaging (Styrofoam) Flexible plastic packaging, including bread bags, produce bags, outer plastic packaging and zipper bags Empty aerosol containers Laminated paper and plastic packaging, including stand-up pouches, frozen food bags and pet food bags Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization, will coordinate Devon’s residential recycling program as part of Alberta’s transition to EPR. The program is intended to create a more consistent approach to recycling across the province while shifting recycling costs to the producers of the materials residents purchase and use. As part of the transition, Integrity Waste Solutions will become Devon’s new residential recycling collection contractor on October 1, replacing GFL Environmental for recycling collection.
