Devon residents are encouraged to pick up a kitchen catcher at no cost at the Town of Devon Office. Kitchen catchers are a handy tool for ensuring organic waste produced by residents make it into the organics waste stream to be disposed off in an environmentally sound manner. The small receptacles fit just about anywhere in your kitchen. “We are always looking for programs and initiatives to provide residents with the tools needed to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable living,” said Andy Tchir, Environment and Sustainability Coordinator for the Town of Devon. “This kitchen catcher program is a cost-effective way to provide residents a convenient means of proper organics disposal.” According to a waste audit conducted in 2018, 34 per cent of the contents of the average resident’s black garbage cart was composed of organic waste that can be readily diverted into the organics cart with the easy-to-use kitchen catcher. Separating out organics from other waste is important as it decreases the amount of material sent to the landfill, reduces the release of methane gas into atmosphere and creates productive uses for the material, such as a nutrient rich compost added to soil.
