6 Community Events With the end of Daylight Saving Time approaching on Sunday, November 2, Devon RCMP is reminding residents to take extra care on the roads and around their homes as we adjust to the seasonal time change. Shorter daylight hours can impact visibility, home security, and general awareness — making it a good time to review a few key safety measures. Fall safety tips from Devon RCMP: Turn on your headlights earlier: Ensure your vehicle is visible to others, especially during the first week after the time change when evenings are noticeably darker. Check vehicle lights: Confirm that all headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are in good working order before heading out. Slow down in low light: Reduce speed in residential areas, school zones, and near crosswalks to prevent accidents. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists: They can be harder to see in early evening hours — always stay alert and yield when appropriate. Be mindful of sun glare: The rising sun can cause visibility issues during morning commutes; sunglasses can help mitigate glare. Secure your home: Lock all doors and windows, even for short trips away, as darker evenings can increase opportunities for theft. Light up your property: Use motion-sensor or timed outdoor lighting to improve visibility and deter intruders. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: The time change is a perfect reminder to check these devices and replace batteries if needed. “Seasonal changes are a great opportunity to refresh your safety habits, both on the road and at home,” says Devon RCMP. “A few simple steps can go a long way in preventing accidents and keeping our community safe.” Stay connected with Devon RCMP for more safety tips by following @RCMPinAlberta on Facebook and @RCMPAlberta on X.
