Non-essential close contact personal services businesses ordered to close

To protect the health and safety of Albertans, as of 8 p.m. Friday, Mar. 27, the Government of Alberta (GoA) has applied additional restrictions onto workplaces in the province including limiting all mass gatherings to 15 people or less.

Along with these restrictions, the GoA is also prohibiting access to a number of close contact personal services in their continued efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

These services include:

  • Personal service facilities and cosmetic enhancement including: esthetics, manicure, pedicure, body waxing, make-up, body, nose and ear piercing, tattoos, artificial tanning, and spray tanning, hairstyling, barbering, facial treatments, eyebrow and eyelash treatments, laser hair and tattoo removal and cosmetic skin and body treatments.

  • Wellness studios/clinics including: floatation tanks, colonic irrigation, massage and reflexology.

  • Non-emergency and non-critical health services including: dentistry, physiotherapy, massage, foot care and podiatry, acupuncture and acupressure, chiropractic services and naturopathy.

Workplaces that are not otherwise restricted or ordered to close can only have more than 15 workers on site as long as they follow all public health guidelines including social distancing measures.

“We are truly hopeful that these necessary actions outlined by the Chief Medical Officer will quickly eliminate the spread of COVID-19,” said Ray Ralph, Mayor for the Town of Devon. “We will continue to do whatever it takes to keep our community safe hope these changes allow our business community to open again in short order to restore our local economy.”

Many essential Devon businesses will remain open including grocery stores and pharmacies. Dining in restaurants is no longer allowed, however takeout and pickup is available. A full list of essential services is available at alberta.ca/essential-services.aspx.
