94 Community Events The Town of Devon has seen an increase in complaints and inquiries regarding certain electric bikes (e-bikes) and their use in our community. To help residents better understand the rules, we are taking a public education approach to ensure everyone can operate these vehicles safely and legally. What Makes an E-Bike Legal? Under Alberta’s small vehicle guidelines, e-bikes must meet the following requirements: Maximum power output of 500 watts Maximum speed of 32 km/h Must include pedals and the ability to be powered by human effort Not sold exclusively for off-highway or non-highway use If an e-bike does not meet these standards, it is classified as a motor vehicle under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act. What Does This Mean for Operators? If your e-bike is considered a motor vehicle, you may be required to: Obtain licensing, registration, and insurance Follow all rules of the road for motor vehicles Avoid use on provincial/local roads, trails, and sidewalks where restricted or prohibited We encourage all owners to check with their insurance provider and local registries office to determine the steps required to make their vehicle legal for use.
