Friday, May 29, 2026 1 Community Events Residents may have noticed forest tent caterpillars on trees and shrubs throughout Devon. While they can look alarming in large numbers, forest tent caterpillars are usually not harmful to healthy trees. Most trees can handle light to moderate leaf loss and recover well. Forest tent caterpillars feed on broadleaved trees and shrubs such as aspen, poplar, birch, ash, fruit trees and cotoneaster. They can be identified by blue stripes along their sides and white, keyhole-shaped markings down their backs. In most cases, no control measures are needed and outbreaks are short-lived. Natural predators, including birds and ground beetles, help keep populations in check. Residents who wish to manage caterpillars on their property can: Remove egg bands from twigs and branches using a dull blade. Hose caterpillar clusters off trees or place them in a bucket of water for disposal. Remove and dispose of cocoons and silk mats. Use insecticides only as a last resort and always follow label directions. Please note: The Town of Devon does not remove or control forest tent caterpillars on private or Town-owned lands.
